State Information

Lying beneath Washington and above California, Oregon is a large producer of timber and paper products. Outside of its main centers, which lie mainly to its west, the state is home to a number of farms, dealing mainly in wheat and cattle. Oregon is also one of the only states not to have self-service gas stations. Visitors to the state (and to New Jersey, whose laws are similar) are either delighted or confused when asked to sit in their cars while attendants pump their gas!

The origin of the state’s name is unknown: the French word for Hurricane (Ouragan) was once the name of the Columbia River, and this is the most likely source. The territory became a state on February 14, 1859 and is home to around 3.6 million people.
