State Information

California, nicknamed the 'Golden State' for its summer and autumn coloration, became a state in 1850 (although this only included the upper portion of the state at the time).

California was the culmination for many Americans of the idea of 'manifest destiny' that resulted in the colonization of the entire stretch from east to west of the modern 'lower 48' United States.
