State Information

This state, and the south end of Lake Michigan, is home to the Indy 500 and was the second home of Abraham Lincoln, who moved to the state at the age of seven. Lewis and Clark, after whom many a Northwest location is named, began their exploration from For Vincennes, IN.

The state is known as the Hoosier State, and a great number of the state’s residents think of themselves as “Hoosiers” as opposed to “Indianans.” The origination of this term, as is the case with many state names, is contentious, although some theories include the penchant early settlers had for asking “Who’s yere?” when somebody knocked on their doors! Another vaguely plausible theory is that there was once a contractor named Hoosier who always hired laborers from Indiana. These laborers were thus known as “Hoosier’s Men.”
