State Information
Both Carolinas were named in honor of King Charles I, as Carolus is Latin for Charles. Made a state on May 23, 1788, South Carolina specializes in the farming of tobacco and soy beans, as well as the production of textiles, chemicals, processed foods and paper products. Tourism is also a growing industry in the area.
North and South Carolina became states at different times because they separated in 1710. Since then, South Carolina has seen the first battle of the civil war, as well as the first US Senator elected by write-in vote (Strom Thurmond, in 1954).
