State Information

The forty-first state of the Union, Montana became a state on November 8, 1889. Interestingly, it was not until May 28, 1999 that Montana adopted numerical speed limits on all of its highways. The speeds are still quite liberal however: 75 mph is the limit on highways, except for in a particularly mountainous area, where the speed limit is reduced to 65!

The state’s major industries include farming (wheat, sugar and beets), mining, lumber and cattle ranching. Its name comes from the Spanish word for mountains and its state motto of “Gold and Silver” speaks to its nickname of the “Treasure State”.
