State Information

Encompassing land at the northern end of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland was named after the Queen consort Henrietta Maria. Washington DC is located directly across the state’s boarder at Bethesda, and thus, Maryland is home to various government services, as is neighboring Virginia.

Its odd tagline, “The Old Line State” was reportedly given to the state by George Washington. It is said that this nickname refers to Maryland’s regular line troops, the Maryland Line.
